Black-chinned Hummingbird (Archilochus alexandri)

There are two species of hummingbirds that show up every summer at the campground. This one, is a male black-chinned hummer, who ferociously tries to keep the other 15 or so hummingbirds away from the feeder! As you can see, they will sometimes stop and perch on the feeder, allowing an easy photo. Many hours are spent by our campers, sitting on the veranda watching these tiny, VERY FAST birds hovering around the tree and feeders.
The black-chinned hummingbird is the only humming bird with a truly black throat!
The feeders provide a quick fix of sugar water, but their primary diet is that of insects!
