Black-backed Woodpecker (Picoides arctus)
This male black-backed
woodpecker is a rare find! Note the yellow cap - a
characteristic of only the male. These birds are uncommon
even in their preferred habitat and we were fortunate to
not only see him, but to get a dozen photos of him! There
are only three species of woodpeckers in Western Canada
that display a black back. Other woodpeckers at the
campground, include the Hairy, Downy, Three-toed, Pileated,
Flicker, and Yellow-bellied sapsucker!
